September 29, 2021: James Crouse has forwarded us an article titled "Vandalism around historic bridge a concern". Andy Barrand, with IN/fw.com, has reported that "after a rash of recent vandalism, the Friends of the Spencerville Covered Bridge are looking to beef up security around the historic structure."
Mary Diehl told the Dekalb County Commissioners that the vandalism is spreading. Ms. Diehl says that the Friends of the Spencerville Covered Bridge are willing to buy security cameras and an iPad to be used in monitoring the briadge and surroundings.
The bridge was reopened in June after being closed for renovations since 2018.
The Spencerville or Coburn Covered Bridge (WGN 14-17-01) is located east of Spencerville in DeKalb County. The bridge was built in 1873 to cross the St. Joseph River. It is 160 feet long and uses a Smith #4 truss.
Keep up to date with information about the bridge at The Spencerville Covered Bridge Facebook group.
