BELVIDERE June 18, 2020 - At this time the Morgan Covered Bridge in Belvidere is closed.
We received a phone call from the Belvidere Road Commissioner Randy Katan on Monday about one of their covered bridges.
Joe Nelson, president of the VCBS, was able to contact Randy and got the following preliminary details:
It turns out that the Morgan Bridge has been having a lot of water running down the road and into the bridge itself. Over time this has been causing damage to the deck which has prompted the closure.
Here are a few pictures of the approach and the decking condition:
The town is currently working with a contractor during the initial assessment and waiting for estimates for the repairs. They are also looking into funding options to cover the work.
The initial thinking is that the bridge will need to be lifted up and have the bed timbers replaced along with repairs to the deck and flooring. Any additional repairs will be assessed during the work.
More details about when the work will begin will be coming in the future. Stay tuned.
The Morgan Covered Bridge, on Morgan Bridge Road, was built in 1887 across the North Branch of the Lamoille River. Unlike other bridges in the area, the 65 foot long Queenpost bridge still supports itself as it did when it was first constructed. Visit the Morgan Bridge web page for more information and details.
