August 7, 2020: James Crouse has passed along this information from the Star website. KPC News is reporting that the Friends of the Spencerville Covered Bridge fundraiser was a success!
The group held a fundraiser on August 1st that included a fish fry and an auction. Mary Diehl, who spearheaded the recent efforts, shared these comments with The Spencerville Covered Bridge Facebook group:
"Good evening everyone. It’s been a whirlwind since Friday, and I know everyone is anxious to hear how we did Saturday. The fish fry and auction were a huge success. Dutch Heritage hit it out of the park! David Ruth Webb - Best darn fish this side of the Mississippi. It’s an evening none of us will ever forget. Denny and Patty and Hoover Auctions, you worked your tails off. To every single person or small business that donated an item, thank you. We all came together and showed the county what Lil’ ole’ Spencerville could pull off. The fish fry and auction raised over $15,000.00 and helped us meet our goal. We did our part, and now it’s time to get the job started and done. We are ready to pull those concrete barriers away and bring the ole’ girl back to life. Mark your calendars because they’ll be a grand parade, and we’ll drive across her once again." ❤️
Mary also reports that she hopes "the job will be open for bids soon and hopefully work started by Fall". She also says that they are very thankful for the fire retardant product that they received from Bill Caswell and the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges organization.
The Spencerville or Coburn Covered Bridge (WGN 14-17-01) is located east of Spencerville in DeKalb County. The bridge was built in 1873 to cross the St. Joseph River. It is 160 feet long and uses a Smith #4 truss.
