October 14, 2020 Anita Larkin Ford has passed along this information from the Premier Broadcasting, Inc. website. Greg Sapp is reporting that the Thompson Mill Covered Bridge has suffered some fire damage.
Vandals set fire to a pile of trash this past weekend. Fire fighters were called to the scene but were not needed. The resulting damage was a "three foot hole in the floor". There was also damage to some of the beams.
Ironically, the refurbished bridge had "protective lighting and a sprinkler system" installed. Unfortunately for the bridge, it had been turned off due to lack of funds.

The Thompson Mill Covered Bridge (WGN 13-87-01) is located in the town of Dry Point in Shelby County. The 105 foot Howe truss bridge was built in 1868 and crosses the Kaskaskia River.
