Temporary Fix for Shaffer Covered Bridge

WGN 38-56-11

Google Map of Pennsylvania with state seal

December 11, 2019: Anita Larkin Ford has passed along this information from The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown, PA about the Shaffer Covered Bridge in Somerset County, PA.

According to the article, money to repair the bridge has been denied by the state. The bridge was closed in June for structural issues. The projected cost of the project is around $200,000.

However, work is beginning with roof stabilization with the goal of reopening the bridge to light traffic in the near future. In addition, behind the scenes work is being done to arrange for the installation of additional supports to further stabilize and strengthen the bridge. The completion date of the additional work is unknown at this time.

The World Guide to Covered Bridges lists the bridge as a single span Multiple King with Tied Arch. It was built in 1877 and measures 56 feet in length. The bridge is also known as Ben's Creek since it crosses Ben's Creek in Conemaugh Township.
