August 13, 2013 Montpelier, VT - The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges and the Preservation Trust of Vermont are two private, nonprofit groups working to save the Sanborn Covered Bridge in Lyndonville, Vermont. Due to severe structural damage the privately owned bridge is on the verge of collapsing into the Passumpsic River.
The present need is to stabilize the bridge as soon as possible. Experts are projecting that the bridge could collapse within the next few weeks if no action is taken. Funding for the repairs is an issue since the bridge is privately owned. The current owners do not have the funds to stabilize the bridge.
The Sanborn Covered Bridge is historically significant since it is the last of the Paddleford truss bridges in Vermont. The bridge was built in 1869 to cross the Passumpsic River. In 1960 the bridge was moved to the Sanford Farm to cross the West Branch of the Passumpsic River.
