December 30, 2013, Greenfield, Massachusetts - The 41 year old Greenfield covered bridge has been out of commission since Tropical Storm Irene in August of 2011. The storm, which caused widespread damage, moved the bridge off its abutments. Since that time it has been located in a nearby parking lot. Repairs are scheduled to be begin in April and to be completed by year end 2014. When repairs are completed the bridge will be open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Estimates for the repairs are ranging between $899,000 and $1.7 million. The funds will come from a few sources including the town and FEMA. The town is also considering fireproofing, warning signs for height limits, and a new roof. These additional items will add to the repair cost estimates.
The Greenfield covered bridge was built in 1972 to replace a 100 year old bridge that was destroyed by arson. The current bridge was closed in 2002 due to its poor condition.
