December 8, 2009 - After repeated damage to both the Bartonsville and Worrall covered bridges, the Town of Rockingham has posted height signs on the road served by the Bartonsville bridge (Worrall Bridge is currently under reconstruction). For the story, click here Bridgewatchers Nightmare.
The strategy in placing the height signs at the entries to the covered bridge road, is to warn the drivers of oversized vehicles before they find themseves at a too low bridge portal and no place to turn around. One sign is at an intersection a half-mile from the bridge, the other is at an intersection three miles away. These are for drivers who read signs.
Those who don't care about signs should be aware that there very well may be a camera waiting for them at the bridge--both the Vermont Covered Bridge Society and the Town are keeping an eye on Rockingham's covered bridges because of the damage done to them. Someone has to pay for repairs and the poor devil on film will be elected.
