GIRARD TOWNSHIP, Erie County - The Pennsylvania State Police at Girard are asking for the public's help in finding the arsonist who burned the historic Gudgeonville Bridge. The fire was ruled arson by a state police fire marshal.
The bridge in western Erie County was destroyed by fire around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, police said. A white sport utility vehicle was seen by witnesses leaving the area headed east on Gudgeonville Road prior to the fire. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call state police at Girard at (814) 774-9611 or Erie County Crime Stoppers at (814) 898-4636.
The 83-foot bridge was built c1868 to cross Elk Creek in a single span using a multiple king post truss.The bridge, which served Gudgeon Road, was on the National Register of Historic Sites.
