An email message from Richard Stanley Allen of Lancaster, PA pointed out an article in the May 3, 2006 edition of the Lancaster Ne w Era entitled, " Is it the end of the road for historic covered bridge?" The article says that the Owner of the Herr's Mill/Soudersburg Bridge, PA-36-21 has inquired of Strasburg Township officials whether a permit is required to tear down the bridge!
The bridge is privately owned and a part of Mill Bridge Village. The owner says they have been taking care of the bridge for some years but that it has fallen into disrepair. The owner Brian Koplan had no comment when asked about tearing the bridge down and says talk of tearing it down is premature. Since the bridge is privately owned, funding is practically non-existant.
It would be a shame to lose this last remaining 2-span covered bridge wholly within Lancaster County. Any ideas?
