August 14, 2002 - It was brought to my attention that WMUR was reporting that the Haverhill-Bath Covered Bridge was destroyed by arson this morning.

This is not true!

According to the Haverhill Town Manager someone did start a small fire on the sidewalk near the center of the bridge around 1 am. The fire was started under the wood boards that cover an abandoned waterline running along the sidewalk. The Protectowire ® fire detection system on the bridge detected the fire and alerted the fire department who arrived quickly and put the fire out.

Initially, the damage appears to be limited to the waterline covering boards and slight charring of some truss members. We will be inspecting the damage as part of our on-call services for the company that insures the bridge.

The Towns of Haverhill and Bath selected HTA for the rehabilitation of this bridge last year (pictures attached). We have completed the Engineering Study phase of the project and will be starting final design soon. The rehabilitation will generally consist of replacement/repair of deteriorated or damaged members, a new metal roof, abutment and pier repairs, and will essentially retain the current look of the bridge.
