This view of the Willard Bridge was taken from the bed of the Ottauquechee River below the woolen factory dam. The wooden cribbing used to retain the mill pond can be seen atop the bedrock escarpment.
Ed Barna notes that the bridge had some repairs done in the 1950's: "The windows...were an innovation during (the) 1953 repairs; previously, the sides had been tightly boarded to keep horses from shying at the sight of the river and falls below ". (Barna, E. (1996) Covered Bridges of Vermont. Woodstock, Vermont: The Countryman Press. pg. 147)
Richard Sanders Allen provides some more detail about the 1953 repairs by noting that the bridge "was given a new roof and re-sided with a neat board-and-batten finish" (Sanders Allen, R. (1962) Rare Old Covered Bridges of Windsor County Vermont. Brattleboro, Vermont: The Book Cellar pg. 18).
In 2009 the bridge had some further repairs done. Member John Weaver reported in the Spring 2009 edition of the Bridger that "The most recent work included (a) new roof, fire retardant, insecticide, stone wall re-pointing, and new railings. The work started in early May 2009. Wright Construction was the prime contractor."
