After being in service for 149 years the original Longley Bridge was closed in 2012. The bridge was no longer able to carry the required loads. A temporary bridge was constructed to bypass the closed covered bridge.
In 2017 the original Longley bridge was removed and a replacement covered bridge was built on the same location. Alpine Construction of Schuylerville, New York was awarded the contract. The scope of work included the replacement of the Town Lattice trusses, installation of a new floor system, replacement of the siding and the steel roofing, and minor substructure and approach work.
Very little of the "original fabric" was able to be salvaged. Jim Ligon of Alpine Construction reports that the original material that was not able to be reused was given to a neighbor of the bridge who plans on reusing them.
Our thanks to the Town of Montgomery for allowing the posting of the Vermont Covered Bridge Society Welcome patch. For more information about the Montgomery area visit their website at www.montgomeryvt.us.
