According to the Covered Spans of Yesteryear website the bridge was "unsafe for traffic" and was closed in 1993. The bridge was "bypassed with a temporary bridge". The present Hopkins bridge was completely renovated in 1999 by Renaud Brothers Construction of Vernon, Vermont.
