Welcome to the Vermont Covered Bridge Society website. The society was started in 2000 to address the loss of these bridges and to preserve those bridges that remain.

We have semi-annual meetings which at held at different locations throughout the state of Vermont. In addition to the meetings we publish a quarterly newsletter entitled The Bridger. The society also has a Facebook page and group, an Instagram and a Twitter feed.

We have accumulated a wealth of information since we began. Please make yourself at home and look around the site. We have covered bridge news articles, tours, newsletters, and covered bridge links. If you are interested in joining the VCBS, select the Membership tab and download an application.

We hope you find something that interests you. Thanks for stopping by. May all your travels be "covered" :-)

Please send an email to the Vermont Covered Bridge Society regarding any additions, corrections, or anything else relating to the website.

Our thanks to John H. Knox for allowing us to use some of his covered bridge photographs in the slideshow below. Visit John's Facebook page to follow all his amazing Vermont photographic adventures: Vermont By A Vermonter

The VCBS may contribute up to $500 for the application of fire retardant to your historic or authentic covered bridge in Vermont. This measure could save your covered bridge from destruction in the event of a fire. Contact us by email at Vermont Covered Bridge Society or by phone (802) 858-6069 for information.

Sanborn Covered Bridge Restoration Project: Update

The Sanborn Covered Bridge project progresses quietly and slowly. After the damaging flooding of 2024, the bridge was moved off of the Passumpsic River and has been housed on the Town owned parcel located to the south. Since that time, the engineering team has worked through a new design for the bridge, bringing the floor of the bridge above the 500-year flood event, safeguarding the structure from devastation in the future.

The project has received clearance from 4 of the 5 federal funding partners, has secured the permits required for the project, and is in the final stage of obtaining an extended Construction and Maintenance easement on the north side of the bridge. The project is expected to go out to bid in March 2026. Once bids are received, the Town will determine if the project can happen with the funds that have been secured for the project.

Donations to the Sanborn Covered Bridge project are still being accepted and are greatly appreciated. The Town of Lyndon will determine whether the project can move forward once bids are received.

Donations can be sent to:

Further information can be provided by contacting Nicole Gratton at the Preservation Trust of Vermont.

Our thanks to Nicole for providing this update. We also thank the Town of Lyndon for continuing to collect funds toward this project.
